The Fruit Basket Cake: Fresh fruit, an airy chiffon cake, and lightly sweetened whipped cream make a delicious dessert perfect for a special occasion.
At the Sunday Farmer’s Market there continues to be an abundance of wonderful berries available so I decided to show you how to make a fruit basket cake.
What? You’ve never heard of a fruit basket cake? Believe me, I had no idea what it was myself until I moved to Sacramento and worked at a bakery. But ask anyone from Sacramento or the surrounding areas what a fruit basket cake is and chances are you’ll get a resounding “OHMYGOD I LOVE THAT CAKE!”
Essentially it is a white/yellow cake filled with fresh fruit and iced in whipped cream. Simple, classic, and oh so delicious.
Many bakeries do it differently, using different fruits. It is a cake I’ve done more times than I can remember, but until I started working at the local bakeries, I never knew there was an actual name for it. The fruit basket cake is by far the most popular cake at any bakery I’ve worked at. At the bakeries where I’ve worked, it is usually filled with strawberries and bananas, but you can definitely substitute the fruit with whatever fruit you prefer. I’ve used blueberries, pineapple, kiwi, and mandarin oranges as well!
It’s probably the closest thing to a guilt-free cake you’re going to get. A client of mine even ordered this cake for a special breakfast treat once! – Cake for breakfast? I’m in!
And I’m going to show you how to make this fruit basket cake, just like they’re made at the bakery, with tips throughout the post to make it foolproof!

My delicious and easy homemade Cheesecake Ice Cream recipe:
No ice cream machine required!
I owe you guys a cheesecake recipe for this month’s post for The Cheesecake Project. But what’s better than cheesecake in the summer? Homemade Cheesecake Ice Cream! The best part is, you don’t even need an ice cream machine/maker!! Excited yet? I know I am!
I’ve long been tempted to make homemade ice cream, and not just any ice cream, but one of my favorite flavors: plain cheesecake ice cream, like the one at Cold Stone Creamery. No strawberries and no chunks of cheesecake folded into vanilla ice cream.
There’s just one problem: I don’t have an ice cream maker/machine. So instead, I ended up going to the store to buy a container of ice cream (though, not the flavor I was really craving).
But now that I’m planning an Ice Cream Shoppe Party for my oldest munchkin’s 6th birthday (don’t worry, I promise to share all the recipes, DIY, and design details after the party is all said and done!), I can’t stop thinking how cool it would be to have homemade ice cream for the ice cream bar I’m planning. Nothing says good morning like a batch of freshly baked blueberry muffins.
I love extra crumb topping on mine!
My little munchkins love blueberries more than any other fruit in existence… and that’s great, you know, antioxidants and all. Fortunately and unfortunately, my entire family knows that.
This past week, we were given several giant containers of organic blueberries by various family members: 3 lbs total to be exact (in addition to the 2 pints we already had at home from the farmer’s market)!
Tons of blueberries!
What am I supposed to do with all those plump, juicy blueberries before they went bad?! Of course, I froze some for smoothies, but some were starting to get soft and I just wanted to find a way to use them up!
So of course the first thing that came to mind were blueberry muffins!

My secret (well not so secret anymore!), go to, easy moist chocolate cake recipe.
Sorry for not posting mid week, but this past week has been extremely crazy. From cake orders from my cake studio, my 5 year old’s end of kindergarten celebrations and events (complete with cupcakes), and getting invitations designed and sent out for her 6th birthday as well, it’s been pretty hectic.
But through all the craziness, I tried to remember to take pictures of the desserts I made so I can share them all with you!

An impressive, yet easy fruit tart for the summer months featuring nectarines and plums.
This weekend, the market was abundant with beautiful, sweet nectarines and juicy red plums wherever we turned so for this week’s Farmer’s Market Sunday post, I simply had to share a recipe that showcased these vibrant stone fruits.
I don’t know about you, but when it’s hot outside and one of those lazy summer days, I want to spend as little time in the kitchen as possible. So when I was trying to figure out what to do with the fruit, I wanted something simple, yet elegant in presentation because this tart was made for a get together my aunt was hosting. Read More →
Lemonade is a must for summer! Here’s a quick, easy, and fun recipe to make lemonade just like the ones from the state and county fair!
This isn’t exactly a dessert post, but with record breaking heat here in Sacramento, there’s only one thing I want. Freshly Squeezed Lemonade!
Refreshing, sweet yet tart, and always perfect for summer, especially when it just takes half a lemon, a spoonful of sugar, and literally seconds to make a fresh glass. I just made one for myself a minute ago and it’s totally hitting the spot! Read More →
The. Best. Peach. Cobbler. Ever.
Stop what you’re doing and make this right now. You’ll thank me later. I promise.
So it’s Farmer’s Market Sunday and we just made it before they all packed up – the best part about that is almost everything is marked down… like fresh picked juicy peaches at only $1/lb.
Which brings us to this week’s farmer’s market recipe. The ultimate fresh peach cobbler recipe (with blueberries).

Moist and light lemon chiffon cake with creamy cheesecake mousse filling, iced in whipped cream…are you drooling yet?
7 years ago last Monday, Ryan and I were married…It was a wonderful day with family, friends, and everyone had a great time. Why wouldn’t they when we plastered them with course after course of delicious food, and ended with the most amazing cake that my aunt (who incidentally also taught me how to bake and decorate cakes) and my cousin made for us. (A million thanks again Tita Jo and Christina!!!)
I thought it would be nice to make that same cake, the lemon chiffon cake with cheesecake mousse to celebrate our anniversary.. and it was just as delicious as I remember. A pillowy, soft, moist, lightly lemon flavored cake, with a cheesecake mousse filling (my favorite filling ever! thank you Costco!), and in general not overly sweet… (hold on, I need to get another slice) Read More →
Quick and Easy Strawberry Yogurt Creamsicles.
The girls love the farmer’s market, the girls love love LOVE strawberries… so guess what we came home with… yup, you guessed it… and it’s more strawberries than we could possibly consume before they went bad. So I decided to make Strawberry Yogurt Popsicles – with a twist! Read More →
